The Palace of Versailles as we know it today dates from the 17th century. This world-famous palace in southwest Paris is an example of grandeur and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was Louis XIV himself who ordered the enlargement works; these lasted for several decades. The Royal Palace of Versailles is in fact a palace of excess: it has 2,300 rooms spread over more than 63,000 m2 and its park extends over 800 hectares (approximately 8,000 hectares at the time). Until the French Revolution, the Palace of Versailles was a political but also a cultural center, hosting playwrights like Molière or composers like Lully.
